As you most certainly know, I work in the IT Department of a law firm. More specifically, I work in the Telecommunications department and even more specifically than that I am our mobile device admin, among other things. I get to play with new BlackBerrys and part of my job is paying attention what’s coming down the pipeline and why it’s miles above what’s already out there.
I got an iPhone the day it came out, before I was a Telecom nerd. I knew it was awesome, and it was. I had always had AT&T service so I didn’t know I was missing out. I didn’t know about the splendors of Rev A. EV-DO on Sprint and Verizon. I didn’t know phone as modem was awesome when you had that. I didn’t know Verizon’s “It’s the network” wasn’t really just a marketing ploy. I was never as excited about WiMax as I am now.
The iPhone is still cool, but it’s not an awesome phone. It’s wireless technology is behind what is out there. I am still clinging to a 2.5G phone in a 3G and beyond world. I need broadband on my phone. I use my BB as a mobile web browser more now because it is FAST even though it SUCKS!
I guess I should suck it up and buy a 3G iPhone, but I am hesitant about paying more especially if there isn’t good 3G coverage from AT&T in Boston. I need the iPhone on the now network! Or I need ubiqituous WiFi. Come on MIT, where’s the mesh WiFi network you wrote papers about? Bring it on!!! I need more!

What this all comes down to is once you’ve had a taste of what’s out there, you can’t settle for less. Even if it’s an iPhone. All the kool-aid in the world won’t make AT&T’s wireless network faster, but I find it hard to live with myself when awesome things like the iPhone aren’t good enough. I guess I should have entitled this post “Why I hate my job,” but that’s not what it feels like.
I could settle with less. I want less furniture in my office. You’re the best mobile device person I’ve ever met in my life. The only one but the best. I don’t hate my job. Because of you. And R.T. And V.Y. And some other reasons.
